A simple balanced lifestyle: The intake & natural purging of toxins and matter while retaining 'fuel' (vitamins, minerals, antioxidants) allows for balance; a stable equilibrium that's a means of sustaining life.
Food isn't just what we can swallow, it's the tiny molecules in what we eat. That's what fuels us; our energy, our lifeline, our basic necessity.Dareen AbouShackrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04069508608008883336noreply@blogger.comBlogger59125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1662611869687197476.post-14258315216242902272017-07-07T20:41:00.001-04:002017-07-07T20:43:57.955-04:00Best Natural Healing HacksWhat are the best natural healing hacks everyone should know about??

Spices. Flavour your world!!!

<span class="rendered_qtext" style="color: #262626; font-family: "q_serif" , "georgia" , "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><span id="aTSsln" style="color: #262626; font-family: "q_serif" , "georgia" , "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">

This is something as an extra.

Not many know of spices except the usually black pepper, and chili powder and maybe now turmeric.

But there are endless amounts of spices (and by spices I am also including roots, berries, herbs, bark, resin, fruit, seeds, etc)

Spices add flavour to food - this means you can avoid eating unhealthy food because you can spice up the healthy food and make it taste amazing

Spices add health benefits. Some spices aid with digestion, some with flatulence and gas, some help cholesterol, some with diabetes, blood pressure, some with stomach ailments, nausea, some act like Advil as they are anti-inflammatory. And so many more.

Don't be surprised or worry about which spice to use, because all of them almost always are antioxidants and a lot share many of the benefits.

My advice is to always have a spice cabinet, and experiment until you find your favourite combination.

Spices don't have to be added during the cooking phase

Spices can be added after cooking (sprinkled like a salt)

Spices aren't only for cooked foods - add them in salads, dips, drinks, smoothies, tea

Most people in North America don't have a sufficient amount of Vitamin D for optimal health.

Did you know the sun is one great way to obtain Vitamin D, sometimes even just 10 minutes in the sun will do you good (provided it's within good weather conditions and good timing).

Sun rays contains three types of rays: UVA, UVB & UVC.

UVC
- usually never penetrates the atmosphere, so we won't worry about it now.

UVA
- has longer wavelengths and thus penetrates with vigour, It can pass through clouds, smog and the works. It can even pass through glass.
- Longer wavelength means deeper skin penetration.
- UVA may not visibly give you a sunburn since it goes deep in the skin
- Causes damage to melanocytes and the important cells in the skin to keep healthy.
- UVA is correlated with extreme health issues such as serious cancers in the skin (Melanoma).
- UVA is also responsible for ageing spots and wrinkling since it is absorbed by dermis layer of skin releasing free radicals and causing DNA changes.

UVB
- shorter wavelength, can't pass through intense clouds, and glass.
- Since it is short, UVB affects the top layer of skin, the visible layer.
- This type of rays is usually the cause of skin burns, as it affect capillaries near the surface or epidermis.
- UVB is the precursor to VITAMIN D production.
- Due to it's short wavelength, UVB is most prevalent when the sun is directly above you, when there is no clouds, lack of smog, and of course no glass between you and the sun.

Remember, blocking the sun isn't ideal, for the sun provides us with much health.
It is the vitamin D that's created through the exposure of UVB rays that help prevent the damage that is created through the harmful UVA rays.

SUNBLOCKS
Sunblocks aren't as good as they seem. Most sunblocks usually block shorter wavelengths, meaning UVA is left to penetrate the skin and cause detrimental damage. Youl may not see a sunburn and think you are fine, But take in consideration that production of vitamin D through UVB rays, helps prevent some of the damage that the UVA tends to create.
Blocking the UVB alone, and not UVA prevents such production, and is dangerous to your health.
If you necessarily need sunblock, make sure to find UVA/UVB sunblock, usually 70 SPF or higher. Any lower SPF will usually block out only the UVB, and prevent you from forming Vitamin D, to counterbalance the damaging effects.

This goes the same way with windows. If you think you are getting good sun from sitting behind a window, think again. For you are blocking out the good rays and only receiving the bad.

VITAL VITAMINS
When you are in the sun midday, when the sun is right above you and you know UVB light is flying towards you with intensity, take it in. Let your body soak both the rays, knowing that although you are getting some bad rays, you are providing your body with the tools to prevent damage.

TANNING
For those of you who love tanning, you will love UVB as well. Although UVA may give you a longer tan, UVB will prove to give you a quicker tan (considering you don't sit too long to get burnt.)

ON A SIDE NOTE
To prevent skin from burning, consume tomatoes of tomato paste, the lycopene in tomatoes helps in prevent burns from sun exposure

Vitamin D is created through exposure of UVB light to cholesterol cells. Using coconut oil can also help in producing a nice tan. But it takes 48 hours for the Vitamin D to be fully absorbed by our body, and hence if you use soap within this 48 hours to wash your body, this vitamin D will wash away. Rinsing your body with water alone would be ideal in this situation, for you can provide your body some time to acquire all the vitamin D you worked hard to produce. In such cases, you can clean extremely dirty areas, or essential body parts with soap and leave your arms and legs and back free of soap washing.
HEART: Help prevents blood clots reducing chance of heart attacks & strokes.

CHOLESTEROL: antioxidants present in grapes prevent oxidation of LDL cholesterol & in turn prevents this bad cholesterol from blocking blood vessels. Moreover saponins present in grape skin can prevent absorption of chelesterol by binding with it.

FATIGUE: The antioxidants & iron present in grapes helps in prevention of fatigue.

IMMUNE BOOST: Once again, antioxidants help in elimination of free radicals. This helps boost immunity as well as eliminate cancerous cells.

ANTI-CANCER: Resveratrol is considered to have anti-inflammatory effects. Other properties of grapes can inhibit the growth of cancer causing agents and reduce or prevent proliferation of cancerous cells. Aside from prevent cancers, grapes have the ability to suppress gowth & spread of cencer cells.

ALZHEIMER'S: resveratrol (a polyphenol) in grapes helps stall onset of neurodegenerative disease. This helps enhance brain health.

MACULAR DEGENERATION: Vitamin A and other properties in grapes help in preventing age related degeneration (ie. loss of vision)

CATARACTS: damage is caused by free radicals in our system. Antioxidants are required to reduce oxidation process that leaves behind these free radicals. Grape flavonoids reduce and fight the damage that free radicals do - such as cataracts, cardiovascular diseases, cancers & age related problems.

ANTIBACTERIAL: Great for infections. Both antiviral & antibacerial. It has been said that grapes have strong antiviral properties against herpes infections.

KIDNEY DISORDERS: Grapes help reduce the acidity of the uric acid and helps in the elimination of the acid from the system, thereby reducing the work pressure of kidneys.
Dareen AbouShackrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04069508608008883336noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1662611869687197476.post-19813927732769543432012-03-01T15:30:00.000-05:002012-03-01T15:30:14.903-05:00Biscuit Breakfast Egg Sandwich Eggs for breakfast. I had learned of the benefits of seaweed and wanted to share it with family back home. So I took a bag of Nori with me. One day I woke up and went to eat breakfast when I realized we were out of the daily pita bread we usually eat. Everything else was available. So out came the nori seaweed - the substitute to a pita. I used 2 sheets to ensure it held strong.

The toppings I used were must-have ingredients in Lebanon and among my family. The main ingredient is the Labneh (Cheese cloth Strained/Pressed yogurt - with a creamy consistency), then I used Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Parsley, Radish, Lettuce.

I added Labneh to one sheet & covered it with the second sheet & also topped that with labneh. Then just as you prepare sushi, I started added the ingredients that I had. I'm assuming this can be done with many other food choices, it's just a matter of trying it out and deciding on whether it taste good or not. I finally rolled it up and got this:

Might I add, I enjoyed the flavor, as did my younger sister. But I also enjoy eating the nori sushi sheets on their own. Perhaps my taste buds have adapted to the taste and didn't mind it with the Labneh.

It's almost close to the cream cheese they add to some sushi rolls (minus the rice). Enjoy & let me know if you've tried this out - liked it or hated it.

It's simply a yogurt strained of it's whey. After preparing the milk & adding bacterial culture - you end up with yogurt. This yogurt can be separated of it's whey through a straining process with a muslin or cheese cloth. Take note; the whey (a yellow translucent liquid) contains minerals and health benefits, don't toss it, rather use it in soups, baking etc. After strained, it's just a matter of putting it in the fridge until your ready to enjoy it!
We consider them as that annoying plant that is usually found between the cracks of a sidewalk or laying comfortably in a yard or on your lawn where it's unwelcome. The unconventional attitude towards Dandelions is of nutritional value and its prized medicinal properties.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">
I'd like to show a very simple how to that will leave your skin glowing and thanking you. I can't wait for summer, I'm definitely going to hold a mini spray bottle around with this mixture. I can keep cool while toning and moisturizing my skin.
Rose water has the ability to soothe the senses and skin. It helps to retain moisture and is mildly astringent, which helps to even skin tone and improve its appearance.
These qualities make it an excellent ingredient for a shaving cream and for any product aimed at calming skin. Rose can also be sprayed on hair to help protect & moisturize it.

Rose water is a staple in Lebanon. It's a must in the house whether to be used for baking or as home remedies for skin irritations & more.

Rose water is a by-product of Rose Oil. During the preparation of Rose essential oil, a distillation process is used & the oil is separated from the water - making both a Rose Oil & Rose Water. Both the rose oil & the rose water contain a beautiful scent & natural healing properties. Rose water contains a variety of nutrients and vitamins; one vitamin that is highly available in rose water is Vitamin C (a must in everyone's diet). Vitamin A can also be found in rose water, as well as antioxidants - such as flavonoids (Quercetin - allergy suppressant, gallic acid, malic acid, citronellol geraniol and more.
Once again no recipe because anything goes!!

Olives, Almonds, Walnuts, Beets are the ingredients.

Rough Olive Beet & Nut Tapenade Recipe:

2 or 3 Tbsp Olives (Black & Green) pitted
1 Tbsp Raw Almonds
1 Tbsp Raw Walnuts
1 Tbsp Cooked Beet
2 small cloves Garlic
1 fresh Tabasco pepper
1 tsp soaked Fava Beans
1 tsp soaked Chickpeas
2 Tbsp Turmeric Infused Olive Oil & Kalunji Oil
1 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar

Thanks to The Bullet, I blended them all to make a paste consistency.

Please note: Avoid adding - the deadly white - Salt. The olives are usually soaked or preserved in salt water, so they provide the dish with enough salt.Dareen AbouShackrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04069508608008883336noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1662611869687197476.post-75000643829761483852012-02-08T15:51:00.003-05:002012-02-08T16:15:18.556-05:00Nutting is better than Nuts

I prepared the Nut & Raisin Crumble the same way as I prepared it in the Nuts, Fig & Raisin Crust Chicken Pizza minus the eggs and the zaatar. The dough didn't hold too well due to the lack of a binder (the egg) - so I crumbled it. I also added a tsp of curry powder to the mix.

On the side I had marinated the chicken in the curry powder & cooked it with garlic & onions. Unlike the Pizza recipe, I decided to slightly cook the available vegetables by adding them to the cooked chicken right before I took it off the stove.

Red Bell Peppers

Radicchio

Lettuce

Raisins

1 tsp shredded Coconut

Lastly I needed a sauce, so went with a Coconut Curry sauce.

¼ cup light coconut milk

1 tsp soy sauce

½ tsp toasted sesame oil

1 tbsp shredded Coconut

½ tsp curry powder

1 clove garlic, minced

½ tsp Sriracha hot chili sauce

1 tsp cornstarch

Whisk all ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat and let the mixture simmer for about 2-3 minutes until glossy and thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.

With pretty much the same ingredients, I was able to make 2 different recipes with different tastes. Luckily, I came across Fresh Turmeric Root today at an Indian Market. You should have seen the excitement on my face. Without hesitation, I bought a pound or two of it. Just as I do with ginger, I put the roots in the freezer, so as to prevent them from molding.

HOW TO:
Prior to putting them in the freezer, I grated a couple of roots into a jar (grated about 2 tablespoons of the turmeric.) Filled the jar with Olive oil, and added a couple teaspoons of Kalunji (Black seed/Nigella) Oil.

I Finally have my own Homemade Turmeric Infused Oil with Kalunji - Time to Heal!!

Now I use this oil instead of plain old Olive oil. It has the benefits of all three plants.

- Olive - Turmeric - Kalunji -

Turmeric: A whole body cleanser, Anti-inflammatory, Liver enhancing, Aid in detoxification, Anti-bacterial, Anti-fungal, Immune Boosting, and rich in antioxidants that aid in the body’s fight against cancer, heart failure, cataracts, dementia and ulcers. (to name a few)

Root

I've attempted to eat the root raw, and i can handle the taste - will attempt to use it for flavouring just as I use raw ginger.

Turmeric (& Kolongi) Oil

During a trip to Dubai and visiting the "Souk" flea market, I came across many vendors who carried spices & herbs. I was in Wonderland!! that's where I came across an infused oil with turmeric and kolongi.

it's a topical application and It's a healer. My cuts healed in half the time they usually did. Baby diaper rashes that wouldn't heal because of constant moisture from the diaper, were reduced in size and severity with this oil. I've used it on some rashes as well, with outstanding results.

This oil also contained Kolongi - a seed mentioned in the Quran as being "A healer of everything except death"

And I flipped it too!

I had some defrosted chicken and a bunch of random greens in the fridge. Beets were simmering in pot on the stove & almonds were soaking in water overnight.

Chopped the chicken into pieces and marinated them with mashed garlic, half a lemon and beet juice. Pinch of salt, pinch of pepper and a squeeze of mustard.

As I also did with the soaked almonds.

On the side, I had the batter for the Crêpes prepared
½ cup water
½ cup milk
1 cup flour
2 eggs
2 tbsp butter
¼ tsp salt

Beet Béchamel Sauce
1 tbsp oil
1 tbsp flour
Stir flour into hot oil , slowly add
1 cup milk
Avoiding adding it quickly, so sauce may clump
Add a pinch of salt and white pepper to taste (White pepper gets disguised, whereas black pepper can be seen) as well as mashed garlic.

For added flavor, you can add herbs or cheese or even spices.

Here, I added beet juice to the sauce to give it a pinkish colour,

Then got a little excited and added my turmeric infused Olive-Kalunji Oil for a health kick, the colour went from pinch to peach, but still tasted good.

- I sauteed the chicken, then added the greens and the nuts and slightly sauteed.
- Crêpes batter, was poured in pan & swirled around.

Plating time:
Placed sauteed chicken & green mix into crêpe, folded it & poured beet béchamel sauce over it.
I've just spent a wonderful month with my twin niece and nephew, along with my brother and sister in law. Now the fun is over, and back to work. Unfortunately, in this cold weather we all came down with a cough. So I decided to remedy all with a little bit of Apple cider vinegar and cayenne pepper. The worst thing about a cough is how it lingers, especially when you're trying to sleep. Throat tickles, and once you cough once, you just can't stop.

This remedy I find, beats halls, or any cough drop remedy. And the good part is, you're doing your body good, without taking in any strong synthetic formula. Even better, it helps build your immunity, gets your blood flowing and stabilizes your pH. Not only can this be a remedy for coughs, but it could be a weight loss solution.

This recipe calls for:

½ cup Apple Cider Vinegar
½ cup Water
1 tsp Cayenne Pepper
4 tsp Natural Honey

HOW TO:
Take one tablespoon on the onset of a cough attack. Moreover, take one spoon before bedtime.

I used to take 2 tablespoons at one time to speed the healing process. If you can tolerate the two spoons, you can by all means do that as well. Don't feel the need to restrict your intake of this in just the times I mentioned. You can take a spoon before or after meals - This can aid in digestion.

This Mix (minus the honey) is a great remedy for acid reflux or stomach ulcers as well. Both Apple cider vinegar and cayenne are helpful in the process.Dareen AbouShackrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04069508608008883336noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1662611869687197476.post-40341650952576768672011-12-13T15:43:00.002-05:002012-02-25T19:14:20.095-05:00Eggs BUNedictEggs make for a great day.
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This image could mean your body is telling you a few things. And as I always say... LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!!
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">One being the obvious constipation; this is when there's a lack of ability in having a bowel movement. Stools most likely are hard, or you may experience incomplete evacuations. But don't be fooled, what must stay in can come out. Excess pushing or straining may caused prolapse of the rectum (and we sure don't need any more appendages). Moreover, 'straining' over a period of time can lead to loss of intestinal and rectal muscle function, causing you to be trapped in a circle of constipation & pushing.
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Think: What goes in Must come out. We eat the food, absorb the nutrients and transfer our body toxins into the remaining matter - the fiber. Now the only thing left to do is expel. The longer it takes us to do such release, the higher the chance we have to reabsorb the toxins.
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">It's considered healthy to make 1-3 bowel movements daily. Get the toxins out as quickly as possible. Constipation is not necessarily a dangerous disorder; however, leaving constipation untreated can cause discomforting symptoms like abdominal pain, swollen abdomen, vomiting, skin problems, hemorrhoids, infrequent bowel movements, bad breath, prolapsed rectum, kidney dysfunction and of course body odor.
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">If you understand how our body functions, it'll be easy to see how one can eliminate or reduced constipation and hardened stools. Tools are needed to help our body in this journey of health. Dietary Fiber plays a major role here.There are two types: Soluble & Insoluble.
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">As there name states, the soluble fiber retains water and turns to gel during digestion. It also slows digestion and nutrient absorption from the stomach and intestine.The reason soluble fiber is good is partly due to the 'gel' for it takes. Think of it as a sponge absorbing all the toxins your body wants to eliminate.
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Soluble fiber is found in Foods such as oat bran, barley, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, peas, and some fruits and vegetables.
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; text-align: center;"> Soluble Fiber - Retains water - Forms a gel - Absorbs toxins for elimination
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Insoluble fiber, on the other hand is insoluble, the fibers in these foods can't be digested so they remain as fibers - similar to a mop, ready to sweep away all the gunk. Insoluble fiber appears to speed the passage of foods through the stomach and intestines and adds bulk to the stool. It is found in Foods such as wheat bran, vegetables and whole grains.
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; text-align: center;">Insoluble Fiber - Adds bulk to stool - Acts as fibre-mop - Sweeps unwanted matter & toxins out
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
Too much fiber and no water for instance can also cause constipation. Balance is key, and once again listen to your body and your stools, they tell you what's going on inside you.
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

Hi everyone... with my craze of being healthy I came across a website that puts all fresh water springs on the map.

I thought of my hometown Lebanon (and specifically 3ammatour) and the many springs it has. Since I don't live in Lebanon and I'm not very familiar with it, I thought some one in this group may know better as to where the 3youn or Water Springs are.

The site is http://www.findaspring.com/submit-a-spring/ here you will be able to put info & pictures of the 3ain (Spring) and put Lebanon on the map. Please note - the water should be good to drink. Lets start drinking clean healthy mineral rich water... it keeps our body happy & healthy.

Let the earth give to us as it is intended. Happy Drinking!!Dareen AbouShackrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04069508608008883336noreply@blogger.com0
